SPILLANE SAYS LILYWHITES HAVE AMBITION THAT MATCHES HIS OWN

- By SAM ALLEN

MICKEY Spillane said the first-team manager post at Cambridge City “ticked all the boxes” as he spoke for the first time since being announced in the role.

This is the first head coaching role for the 36-year-old, following his position as assistant manager at Chelmsford City, where he ended his successful playing career in 2023.

Spillane has strong ties to the club and the surrounding area, having attended school in Cambridge and subsequently played for Cambridge United in his professional career.

He also notably worked under ex-City player Robbie Simpson, who managed him at his last club, Chelmsford. All these connections have made the arrival as the new City boss feel like a homecoming of sorts for Spillane.

“I've got the ties with Cambridge from my childhood, and it’s a club I’ve always known,” said Spillane.

“Having played for Cambridge United as well, there were always ties to here when I was younger.
