Venezuela was left in a state of political uncertainty on Sunday after its President Nico14s Maduro was taken into US custody following a military operation ordered by US President Donald Trump, even as Maduro’s allies retained control of the country’s institutions in Caracas.
Maduro, 63, was flown to New York and placed in the Brooklyn jail. A facility so troubled that some judges have refused to send people there even as it has housed famous inmates such as music stars R Kelly and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The Venezuelan leader faces court proceedings on US charges, including narcoterrorism conspiracy. Indicted in 2020, he is expected to make an initial appearance in a Manhattan federal court on Monday.
