A volcano in Ethiopia's northeastern Afar region has erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, sending vast ash clouds billowing across the Red Sea toward Yemen and Oman.

The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located roughly 500 miles northeast of Addis Ababa near the Eritrean border, began erupting on Sunday and continued for several hours, producing plumes that rose as high as 14km (9 miles) into the atmosphere.
