Eat Right Maharashtra: Safer Food, Better Health

THE FDA CONTINUES INSPECTIONS, SEIZURES OF ADULTERATED PRODUCTS AND PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS. HOWEVER, THE EAT RIGHT INITIATIVES ADD A PREVENTIVE LAYER, ENCOURAGING VOLUNTARY COMPLIANCE THROUGH EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
-
Food remains an often-overlooked frontier in public health.
While policies typically focus on hospitals, medicines or disease control, the daily act of eating—what is consumed, how it is prepared and how safe it is—receives far less attention. Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is seeking to change this through a series of initiatives under the national Eat Right India campaign. These measures are reshaping the state's food ecosystem, promoting safety, nutrition and sustainability.
From National Vision to Local Action
Launched by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Eat Right India rests on three pillars: “Eat Safe, Eat Healthy, Eat Sustainable.” Maharashtra, one of India’s largest consumer markets, has become a testing ground for large-scale implementation. The FDA has rolled out sub-programmes such as Eat Right Campus, Eat Right School, Hygiene Rating for eateries, Clean Street Food Hubs and Eat Right Fruit and Vegetable Markets, each adapted to local needs.
This marks a shift from a purely punitive regulatory approach to one that blends enforcement with education, capacity building and community engagement. The aim is to create an environment where safe and nutritious food becomes the norm.
