2 Hadi murder suspects fled to India: B'desh

Police in Bangladesh on Sunday claimed that two prime suspects in the murder of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi had fled to India, even as Dhaka mounted a rebuttal to New Delhi's criticism over minority rights and confronted intensifying political churn ahead of next month's elections.

A senior Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officer said Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, accused of killing Hadi during an election campaign on December 12, crossed into Meghalaya through the Haluaghat border with local assistance. Hadi, a spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho and a prominent face of last year's mass protests that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government, died in Singapore on December 18. Police said Bangladesh was in touch with Indian authorities through formal and informal channels to secure the fugitives' arrest and extradition, though there was no immediate response from New Delhi.
