78 Filipinos Detained in Myanmar Scam Hub Crackdown

SEVENTY-EIGHT Filipinos rescued from a scam compound in Myawaddy, Myanmar, are now detained for immigration violations, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed.
The DFA said the group is being held in Hpa-An, Kayin State—an area where Karen rebels have long fought for independence from the Myanmar government.
It remains unclear whether the Filipinos are under the custody of the Myanmar junta or rebel forces.
Myawaddy, in southeastern Kayin State, is controlled by the pro-junta Karen State Border Guard Force but remains heavily contested by Karen rebel groups.
