Lampard then left the Rams in the summer to join Chelsea but is now in charge of Coventry City, who are 10 points clear at the top of the Championship.

MARTYN Waghorn believes the squad that took Derby County to the brink of the Premier League under Frank Lampard should have been promoted.

In a wide-ranging interview with Undr the Cosh, the striker has been looking back at his time at Pride Park Stadium after he joined the club from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2018.

That season proved to be a dramatic one as Lampard's team reached the Championship playoff final, beating Leeds United in the semis in a campaign that became infamous for the Spygate controversy.

But their hopes of a return to the top flight came to an end at Wembley where Aston Villa ran out 2-1 winners.

Jack Marriott, who scored twice for the Rams in the playoff second leg at Elland Road, was on the bench at Wembley, as was Waghorn, who missed the Leeds game through injury.

Marriott came off the bench to score with nine minutes remaining but Derby couldn't force extra time.
