SIX Burton Athletics Club members travelled to Madeira to represent Great Britain at the European Athletics Championships.

Club records shattered as Burton athletes shine on European stage

The event brought together veteran athletes from across Europe to compete in track, field and cross-country disciplines held at venues including Ribeira Brava Stadium, the Camara de Lobos track and the RG3 military base.

Paul Edwards was the first Burton athlete to compete, lining up in the men's 65 400 metres at Ribeira Brava. Despite concerns about the impact of the bends on his two new hips, he finished fifth in his heat in 71.95 seconds, setting a new club record.

He returned later in the week for the men's 65 200 metres, again finishing fifth in 30.82 seconds to reclaim another club record.

Jill Lamb opened her competition at RG3 in the women's 65 weight throw, producing a final-round effort of 7.34 metres for a new club record and 21st place overall.
