World Cup Extra police patrols - and drink-driving tests planned

POLICE are planning a major operation to keep order in Bristol during the World Cup.

Avon and Somerset Police said it anticipated a spike in crime on England match days and threatened banning orders could be used against those causing trouble.
This time round bosses are particularly concerned about ‘‘morning after’’ drink-driving due to the late kick-offs caused by the time difference in America. England’s group matches will kick off as late as 10pm.
And the domestic violence division is braced for an increase in calls due to anticipated heavy alcohol use by perpetrators.
Assistant Chief Constable Rachel Shields, who is leading the policing plans during the World Cup, said: ‘‘Let’s be clear, we want people to enjoy the tournament. While we do not want to stop people having fun, our number one priority is public safety, and that’s why we will be carrying out extra patrols throughout the tournament and engaging with football fans and others across Avon and Somerset.
