HERE are certain things that people used to do all year round, but which now they only do at Christmas, if at all.

Going to church, for instance, or, in the case of the Latimer family, buying (and then not reading) the Radio Times
Then there's talking about adverts on TV.
In recent years the "Christmas" ads from certain of the big shopping concerns - the likes of John Lewis, M&S, Sainsburys and so on - have become big events, breathlessly trailed and hyped in the media as though they were the new Harry Potter movie.
I can't say any of this has entered my consciousness. I did see half an ad which involved some carrots getting married (Aldi? Lidl?) but that's about it.
