Waste watch Switch to three-weekly collections as city considers options

THREE-WEEKLY rubbish collections have launched in North Somerset - and will be closely watched by Bristol's own waste bosses.

The hugely controversial plans mean that black bins for general waste will now only be collected once every three weeks, instead of fortnightly. Recycling will continue to be collected every week - and the council will now be picking up more types of recycling.

People can now bag up their soft plastics like plastic bags, plastic wrapping, and crisp packets and put them in their glass recycling box.

Annemieke Waite, the council cabinet member for planning and environment, said: "If you're recycling absolutely everything you can, there really will be very little left over that needs to go in the black bin!"

Bristol City Council recently announced the results of a public consultation which saw the majority of 17,000 residents say they did not want the existing fortnightly bin collections changed.

But despite calls to rule out the possibility of reducing the frequency, the Green-led authority said a final decision has not yet been made.
