Five races, starting at 9.25pm (GMT), are staged tonight with nine scheduled tomorrow into the early hours of Sunday morning.

It's where the surf meets the turf as the action takes place at Del Mar racecourse, a furlong or so from the Pacific Ocean, although the annual event does rotate host venues and states.

It's billed, by organisers at least, as a world championships of horse racing, although that's not really true and Hong Kong and Australia - two of the leading jurisdictions - pay little attention to it, while, in return, US participants aren't interested in their premier races.

Britain and Ireland do travel best and no one does it better than Aidan O'Brien, the world’s greatest trainer who has the might of the Coolmore breeding operation behind him.
