Council leaders won't resign over dire financial situation

NORTH Somerset Council leaders have rejected calls to resign after a resident told them to step down during an online question and answer session about the authority's dire financial situation.

The administration has warned it faces effective bankruptcy and may issue a section 114 notice unless the Government permits an exceptional council tax increase.

Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council, said: "I am not going to resign because we are in a difficult situation and there are tough choices to be made."
