DJ helped launched the career of band still enjoying their Teenage Kicks nearly 50 years later

- by Gazette Reporter

If ever there was an album cover that portrayed a moment in time it is The Undertones' self-titled debut LP released in 1979.

Snapped by the photographer of the Derry Journal newspaper, the simple black and white image catches the five Undertones dangling their legs over a brick wall.

They are wearing the punk uniform of shiny black Doctor Martens’ boots, skinny drainpipe jeans and spiky tufted hair.

Feargal Sharkey, their original vocalist, is sporting an olive-green fishtail Parka coat and an Arran jumper.

“That picture was taken at Bull Park in Derry, my playground as a kid,” recalled The Undertones guitarist Damian O’Neill.
