Victim killed after being hit by driver looking at apps on her phone

THE victims known to Philip are: ■Martyn, 41, who was killed in 2020 when a driver who was looking at social media apps on her phone ploughed into him and his friend James as they cycled along the Redditch A441 bypass in Alvechurch, Worcestershire. Driver Sania Shabbir initially denied dangerous driving charges but changed her plea on the day of her trial in 2023.

She was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and banned from driving for four years and nine months.

■Nicky, 21, was killed in Harborne in 2016, struck by a motorist in a car travelling on the wrong side of the road while overtaking parked vehicles on a winter's evening.

The motorist responsible was given a two-year community order and a one-year driving ban for careless driving.

The tragedy was witnessed by Nicky's brother and friends cycling with him.
