New cameras to catch drivers who ignore red

NEW cameras are to go up at Birmingham traffic junctions to catch motorists ignoring red lights after intense lobbying from road safety campaigners.

Birmingham City Council and the police have confirmed the return of fixed traffic light cameras.

The first set of red-light cameras will go up on Belgrave Middleway, scene of multiple accidents and near misses.

The decision to put cameras back up more than a decade after fixed cameras were switched off to save money comes after evidence gathered by campaigners including the volunteer group Better Streets for Birmingham.

The group have collected data showing how frequently motorists flout the lights, endangering pedestrians and cyclists crossing busy highways, with bad drivers confident they won't get caught.
