I travel abroad for my holidays, there’s usually a thriving local market.Noisy, vibrant, teeming with life, it’s a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the culture.

It's also a place where you can try a bit of haggling, should you wish. Here’s a good example of my own haggling technique, tried and tested over many a year:

ME: Excuse me, I’m so sorry to bother you, but how much are these shoes, please?

TRADER: For you, sir, special price. One thousand of your British pounds.

ME: A thousand pounds sterling? Really?

TRADER: Per shoe.

ME: Oh. Righty-ho. Fair enough.
