INSPECTION FOUND SITE HAD 10TH HIGHEST RATE OF SELF-INFLICTED DEATH

- KELLY ASHMORE News Reporter

Drugs 'readily available' as prison needs action

HMP Featherstone

THE future of a Midland prison where drugs were "readily available" depends on "robust actions", an inspection has concluded.

HMP Featherstone also had the tenth highest rate of self-inflicted deaths of all adult male prisons.

There have been four self-inflicted deaths since May 2022, including two last year, with leaders accused of being 'too slow in identifying and implementing learning from fatal incidents and serious incidents of self harm'

HM Inspectorate of Prisons also found conditions in many residential units to be poor, and said the facility, near Wolverhampton, had limited training opportunities, which failed to provide prisoners with the skills they needed for employment.

Support to prevent reoffending in the future was also deemed not good enough.
