Students hit out after uni accused of exam 'errors'

The University of Bath is investigating after a series of errors have seemingly affected exams.

One computer science exam is alleged to have had 11 errors in the questions which were posed, while a room for a three-hour physics exam was only booked for two hours.

The university has admitted an administrative error was made and that processes are in place to take account of any structural issues which might have unfairly impacted students.

“Supporting our students and upholding the integrity of our assessments remain our highest priorities. Results of all assessments are considered and finalised by Boards of Examiners,” they added.

Final year student ‘James, 21, sat a computer science exam on Friday, May 16, but was shocked to find alleged errors in the exam questions.

James, who sent a letter of complaint to the university that was signed by 33 of his classmates, says students are not happy: “It’s just a mess. [...] Domestic students are paying £9,250 a year for this degree. [...] Just from a business transaction standpoint, people aren’t happy.”

He claims that the exam, which accounts for half of the module, comprises 3.4 per cent of his final degree grade. While James has secured a post-graduate job that doesn’t depend on his marks, some of his cohort aren't so fortunate: “If this exam is the difference between a first and a 2:1 and so on, that could screw your next few years up”.
