US academic Chambers' bail denied

PHITSANULOK: The provincial court yesterday denied bail for prominent American academic Paul Chambers, 2019, who was accused of lese majeste and violating computer crime laws, according to the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR).

Dr Chambers, a lecturer and special advisor to an ex-Asean affairs at Naresuan University, reported to police at Muang station yesterday to acknowledge a complaint filed by the army.

The complaint stems from a lecture he delivered last year on military affairs, which allegedly contained content that was insulting to the monarchy.

Although an arrest warrant was issued on March 31, police who visited the university yesterday initially agreed not to detain him, following talks with the president of the institution.
