President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would withdraw National Guard troops from Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland, following a series of legal setbacks over his deployment of military forces in US cities.

Local leaders condemned the moves as authoritarian overreach and mounted a series of successful legal challenges, with the US Supreme Court last week blocking the Chicago deployment.
