Time to guard schools

Bangkok Post

|

February 13, 2026

The school shooting in Songkhla on Wednesday is a stark reminder that schools — which should be the safest of places — remain vulnerable to gun attacks.

The tragedy is only the second major school shooting in Thailand's history, following the horrifying massacre at a kindergarten in Nong Bua Lam Phu in October 2022. That rampage, carried out by a former police sergeant with a history of drug abuse and mental problems, left 38 people dead, including 24 children.

Both incidents share troubling similarities: mental health problems, drug use and the involvement of police firearms.
