Time to clean up visas

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation is taking the right step by ending the student visas for nearly 10,000 foreign nationals.

This move comes as Higher Education Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol also vowed to expand checks on student visas over concerns that foreigners are illegally using such visas to stay and work illegally in Thailand.
The abuse of this visa is not new, and it has long been ignored, so the ministry and the current government deserve credit for addressing it, as it is not a trivial issue, especially when it can be linked to other forms of criminal activity.
Thai police and the Ministry of Commerce have arrested many foreign visitors using a student visa to stay and work at proxy businesses owned by nationals of their own countries in tourism provinces such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.
In the worst cases, these people work in underground businesses such as scams, online illicit betting and human trafficking.
