Social media ‘intel' warning

The National Security Council (NSC) has urged political parties, private groups and volunteers to refrain from sharing locations of civilian shelters as the Thai-Cambodian border clashes persisted yesterday.

Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said the NSC is deeply concerned about the spread of sensitive information via mobile applications, websites and Facebook pages.

These platforms, created by volunteers, NGOs and some parties, have been sharing locations of hospitals, shelters and community areas, albeit with good intentions.

However, given the situation, with Cambodian military forces carrying out attacks targeting civilians, such information could be exploited.

The government is also concerned about the presence of potential spies passing on intel to Cambodia, sources say.

The Interior Ministry and state agencies have been coordinating with local authorities in classified formats.
