Rift in coalition deepens

The rift between the ruling Pheu Thai Party and its coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai Party, is deepening over the control of the Interior Ministry.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra yesterday insisted no preconditions were set during the formation of the coalition government as Bhumjaithai threatens to move into opposition if the portfolio is reassigned.

Tensions are escalating between Pheu Thai and its coalition partner Bhumjaithai over the Interior Ministry portfolio, with Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul insisting the portfolio remain with his party, and warning that Bhumjaithai is prepared to move into opposition should it be reassigned.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees provincial administrations, internal security and local government budget allocations, is widely regarded as one of the most influential portfolios in Thai politics.

Ms Paetongtarn addressed the matter following yesterday's cabinet meeting, downplaying the rift and clarifying that while she had discussed policy implementation and certain work issues with Mr Anutin, there had been no conversation about a cabinet reshuffle.
