REVERSO ALWAYS SCORES ON STYLE

Born a sports watch in 1931, the Reverso embodied a new aesthetics that emerged in the Roaring Twenties. The design movement disseminated globally after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925.

Decades afterwards in the late 1960s, the term Art Deco was coined after this momentous expo. On the occasion of its centenary, Jaeger-LeCoultre looks back on the genesis of the Art-Deco style Reverso amid an age of round pocket watches.

Art Deco principles were combined with the Golden Ratio in the design of the disruptive rectangular wristwatch while the striking coloured dial and index markers broke away from conventional silver dials with Roman and Arabic numerals.

Functionally, the Reverso had to withstand the rigours of polo, following a request from India-based British military officers, who wanted to play the game without wrecking their watches.
