Probe sought into ID card ‘extortion'

Two People's Party MPs, Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn and Somdul Utcharoen, have petitioned the Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA) over allegations that villagers in Chiang Mai are being forced to pay tens of thousands of baht to obtain nationality and ID cards under a cabinet resolution.
DoPA Director-General Nirat Phongsitthithawon received the petition.
According to Mr Wiroj, complaints from residents in Fang, Mae Ai, and Chai Prakan districts were sent to Mr Somdul, who represents Chiang Mai, that officials were extorting money for nationality verification and ID issuance.
This follows a cabinet resolution passed on Oct 29, last year, aimed at expediting nationality processes for 483,626 individuals.
