Oil edges up in volatile trade

Oil prices edged higher last Friday at the end of a volatile week, as traders weighed tensions in Iran and positive sentiment in wider markets.

Upheaval in Venezuela and disruption to Kazakh exports from the Black Sea have also helped lift prices, which are coming off their worst year since 2020 as output gains threaten to outpace sluggish demand growth.

Brent traded above $64 a barrel on Friday after plunging 4.2% on Thursday, the most since June.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly asked President Donald Trump to postpone plans for an attack on Iran, the New York Times reported.

That has reduced the chance of an immediate US response to violent protests in the Islamic Republic, which could have led to disruptions to oil production or shipping.
