Man shot in ICE confrontation in Maryland: Officials

A quiet Baltimore suburb was shaken on Wednesday morning after a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot a driver who tried to evade arrest, according to ICE and local officials, triggering a crash that left the driver and a passenger hospitalised.

Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement that federal officers had approached a van carrying two men without legal status in the unincorporated town of Glen Burnie in Anne Arundel County.

Officers asked the driver to switch off his engine, but the man, identified as Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, a Portuguese national, refused and attempted to flee, she said.
