M23 advance a 'middle finger to US'

The advance of the Rwandan-backed M23 armed group in eastern DR Congo is a "middle finger" to the United States, just days after the signing of a peace agreement in Washington, Burundi's foreign minister told AFP, urging sanctions against Kigali.

The M23 advanced on Tuesday into the outskirts of the strategic city of Uvira in South Kivu, less than a year after the group seized Goma and Bukavu, two key provincial capitals in the mineral-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been plagued by conflict for three decades. It came only days after Kigali and Kinshasa signed a deal brokered by US President Donald Trump aimed at ending the conflict which the US leader called a "great miracle".
