Thai Ruam Palang Party may become key cog in BJT-led coalition given strong grassroots appeal, writes Jutamas Tadthiemrom

Since the announcement of Sunday’s election results, Wasawat Poungponsri, leader of the Thai Ruam Palang Party, has emerged as one of the most closely watched figures among Thailand’s smaller parties — groups widely regarded as crucial to the formation and stability of a Bhumjaithai-led coalition government.

Based in Ubon Ratchathani, the five-year-old Thai Ruam Palang Party secured six seats in the House of Representatives, five constituency seats and one party-list seat in the general election. Its gains in constituencies traditionally dominated by larger parties such as Pheu Thai, Bhumjaithai and Chartthaipattana underline its growing grassroots appeal, particularly in the Lower Northeast.

Widely known by his nickname “Kungfu”, Mr Wasawat has built prominence as a rising local political figure in Ubon Ratchathani, especially in Nam Yuen and Muang Sam Sip districts.

Portrayed as an approachable, new-generation politician, he is seen as a driving force behind the party's Isan strategy and efforts to establish a durable regional base.

Well known among rural communities, he has spent years engaging with border populations in Nam Yuen, where he currently resides.

Between July and December 2025, amid heightened tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, he was actively involved in assisting residents with evacuations and supporting military personnel stationed in the area.
