EYES ON TOP PRIZE: Kunlavut Vitidsarn eyes a return during his semi-final match against Jonatan Christie.

»Kunlavut Vitidsarn has a shot at his first-ever Super 1000 title after reaching the men's singles final of the season-opening BWF Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The Thai world No.2 took 63 minutes to defeat Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 21-16, 21-16 to reach the final of a prestigious Super 1000 event for the first time in his professional career.

Kunlavut is also the first Thai men's singles player to reach the title showdown of the Malaysia Open in 16 years.

Boonsak Ponsana reached the final in 2010 — when the tournament was a Super Series event — and lost to Malaysian great Lee Chong Wei.
