Elephant talks planned with Sri Lanka

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin is set to travel to Sri Lanka to discuss the repatriation of two Thai “ambassador” elephants after concerns rose about their welfare and health.
The elephants are Pratu Pha, who was sent as a goodwill gift 39 years ago, and Sri Narong, sent to Sri Lanka 24 years ago.
In 2023, male elephant Sak Surin was sent back to Thailand, suffering from various ailments and disabilities. He is now under a rehabilitation programme at the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang province.
Thai elephant conservation groups have raised concerns about Pratu Pha and Sri Narong, who want them cared for in their native country during their old age.
However, the elephants are reported to be much loved by Sri Lankans.
