Artist Thanyapat Doungklad expresses her inner emotions and chronicles her growth journey through the character Hana Jam at her debut exhibition

- STORY: SUWITCHA CHAIYONG

DETALS AND OKER FACES

Hana Jam is a female character with bangs created by the talented young artist Thanyapat Doungklad. Thanyapat came up with the idea of Hana Jam when she was a sophomore at the School of Architecture, Art and Design, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL).

Hana Jam, a poker-faced character, appears with long hair adorned with exquisite floral patterns inspired by Japanese kimonos. In addition to unique ideas and intricately detailed drawing skills, Hana Jam appeals to viewers because the character depicts emotional issues Thanyapat goes through, from suffering and sadness to happiness and joy. Hence, Hana Jam has received a positive response from viewers and art collectors.

"I grew up under the influence of Japanese animation and culture. During my sophomore year, we had to create our own character. Since I was interested in Japanese kimono floral patterns, I used them in my artwork and also created my own patterns. I intended to create Hana Jam with a poker face. Many viewers ask me how Hana Jam feels in different paintings because they have different interpretations. It is like an open space where viewers can come up with their own interpretations and connect to their own experience," explained Thanyapat.

In 2023, Thanyapat created the collection "The Adventure In A Wonderland Of Dreams And Love For Rise Up Self-Esteem", inspired by her low self-esteem and confidence. She also uses art as therapy.

"I could not verbally express myself due to low self-esteem and confidence. Therefore, I use visual language for self-expression. In the past, I couldn’t find my true self and was fragile and sensitive. As time passed, I grew up and my artwork grew with me. I also use illustrations to heal and build confidence. I believe that besides receiving support from family members, giving myself encouragement is important," explained Thanyapat.
