Cabinet greenlights tax rejig for plug-in hybrid EVs

The cabinet has approved tax measures for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), effective as of Jan 1 next year.
Speaking after the weekly cabinet meeting, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said the cabinet yesterday approved a draft ministerial regulation of the Finance Ministry on excise tax rates proposed by the Excise Department.
The regulation revises the tax conditions for PHEVs, making the following adjustments: (1) the establishment of a separate tax rate for PHEVs, distinct from hybrid EVs (HEVs); (2) basing the tax calculation criteria solely on the electric driving range per charge; and (3) eliminating fuel tank size as a factor in determining PHEV tax rates.
