Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro considered requesting political asylum in Argentina while working with one of his sons to block a court trial that may land him in jail, according to a police report and documents retrieved from the former president's mobile phone.
The findings led police to recommend additional charges against Mr Bolsonaro and his son, Eduardo, a lawmaker who's been in the US since March lobbying for Donald Trump to interfere in Brazil on behalf of his father. Brazil's top court gave them 48 hours to provide explanations.
The new evidence, published on Wednesday, adds to Mr Bolsonaro’s mounting legal troubles. It particularly complicates his defence against charges that he attempted a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election.
