BCPG seeking to expand US operations

BCPG Plc, the power generation arm of Bangchak Corporation Plc, is setting its sights on expanding operations in the US, targeting the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) Interconnection to meet surging electricity demand driven by the digital economy.

Over recent years, BCPG has acquired stakes in four gas-fired power plants in the PJM area, with a combined capacity of 857 megawatts.

The PJM grid, which serves northern Illinois, Washington DC, and all or parts of 12 other states, has seen electricity demand rise by an average of 5% annually equivalent to 5 gigawatts fuelled by energy-intensive data centres and artificial intelligence technology.

Rawee Boonsinsukh, chief executive and president of BCPG, said new generation capacity in PJM has lagged over the past decade, even as demand has accelerated.
