BETTER ENERGY MANAGEMENT

The new government should speed up the enforcement of the much-delayed power development plan (PDP) and more carefully devise fuel subsidies, said energy analysts.

Preparation of clean energy supply should be jump-started, as mentioned in the PDP, during the four-month period to meet growing business demand, said Praipol Koomsup, an economist at Thammasat University and assistant to former energy minister Narongchai Akrasanee.

Sufficient clean power supply is crucial for Thailand to draw foreign investors either expanding or relocating their production facilities to Southeast Asia, he said.

Under the 2024 PDP, which was not approved by the outgoing Paetongtarn administration, authorities set a target for renewable power to comprise 51% of the nation’s total power supply by 2037, up from 22% at the end of 2024.
