Abhisit poised to return as Dem leader, ex-MP says

Former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has agreed to return as Democrat Party leader following the resignation of Chalermchai Sri-on last week, according to former Democrat MP for Trang, Sathit Wongnongtoey.
Mr Sathit said Mr Abhisit's return would bring hope and raise the morale of a party that has suffered internal divisions and poor election results in recent years. It may also restore public confidence in the party, he added.
Mr Abhisit, 61, who was prime minister from 2008 to 2011 and led the Democrats for 14 years, from 2005 to 2019, stepped down as leader after the party won only 53 House seats in the general election in 2019.
He quit the party in late 2023, but did not close the door on the possibility of rejoining.
