The city currently has an estimated 2.10 lakh stray dogs, of which 1.92 lakh have been vaccinated and sterilised. Statistically, every fourth stray dog has bitten a person this year—a figure that has alarmed both civic officials and health authorities.

'Zero capacity' for more dogs

The Supreme Court's directive that stray dogs must not be released back into the same area after vaccination has triggered a major logistical headache for the AMC. Before release, dogs must be vaccinated, sterilised and kept under observation for at least four days. But the city simply doesn't have the space.
