Gymkhana relocation: Claws out over a clause

Dissenting members say that the managing committee kept them in the dark about letter making the land swap mandatory

A bitter fight has exploded within the elite Ellisbridge Gymkhana after a government letter revealed an explicit condition for the club’s proposed relocation: if the club obtains new land at Ognaj, it must surrender its existing, historic premises at Law Garden.

The letter, written by the Ahmedabad Collector on September 18, has intensified the dispute, with a faction of members alleging the managing committee kept them “in the dark” about the mandatory surrender clause. The matter is set to be heard in the city civil court today, just days before a volatile Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 27.
