Brown jumps in at Harriers

- Jon Couch

PHILLY THE KIDD!

FORMER Premier League boss Phil Brown says he thought he was simply offering struggling Kidderminster Harriers the pearls of his wisdom - but then ended up accpeting the manager's job!

Brown, the former Bolton Wanderers, Derby County and Hull City boss, sat down for a chat with Harriers chairman Richard Lane and the club's new technical director Dean Holdsworth this week following the departure of popular boss Russ Penn.

And within minutes, the 64-year-old agreed to a return to the dugout to help lift the newly-promoted Harriers off the bottom of the National League and out of relegation danger.

"When I got the call from Dean [Holdsworth] the chairman to come and meet I honestly thought they wanted to pick my brains about the situation," Brown told The NLP.

"I've known Dean 25-30 years and have a bit of experience to lend a helping hand, but I didn't realise that the conversation was coming round to me becoming the manager!

"When it was offered to me, I must admit I was excited. There was something nice about the whole day. Something real about it. A proper football club, proper football people."

Brown has managed clubs in each of the top five tiers of English football but his only taste of the National League thus far was a brief six-month stint back at Southend United, which ended in October 2022.
