The US-based non-profit organization 'Water For People' (WFP), established in 1991, has been actively involved in India since 1996, dedicated to the mission of ensuring equitable access to water for everyone to meet their needs. Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) are three of the most basic needs of people across the world. Access to water and sanitation are, in fact, recognized as fundamental human rights. However, as a UN report¹ earlier this year suggested, around 2 billion people in the world do not have access to clean and safe drinking water, while almost 3.6 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation facilities. India faces more than its share of WASH-related issues. The World Bank noted that India is home to 18 percent of the world's population but has only 4 per cent of the planet's water resources, which makes it one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. Worryingly, almost 91 million Indians do not have access to safe water, while 746 million people lack access to safely managed household sanitation facilities.
There are several non-profit organizations as well as private companies who are working individually or collaboratively-sometimes in conjunction with government-led missions to facilitate access to water, sanitation, and hygiene across India, especially in the semi-urban and rural regions where WASH-related issues exist on an even larger scale than in cities.
Among them is the US-based non-profit organization 'Water For People' (WFP), which was founded in 1991, and has been working in India since 1996 towards the mission of ensuring that everyone has equitable access to water to meet their needs.
