IN THE EARLY 1990s, Porsche was going through its toughest period, fighting hard for survival. Inefficient factories, a weak dollar, and the extravagant sportscar models that weren't selling in enough numbers had pushed the German manufacturer to the brink of bankruptcy. It was the Porsche Boxster that came as a blessing and lifted the legendary manufacturer out of its financial troubles.

Unveiled in its concept form in 1993 under the leadership of Wendelin Wiedeking, the 986-generation Boxster was finally launched in 1996 as an affordable two-seater sports car.

The model shared a ton of components with the 911 range which helped Porsche significantly reduce production costs. Although it was also powered by a flat-six, the engine was placed in the middle unlike the 91, making it the best handling sports car in its segment. As a result, the Boxster was an immediate hit.

It also gave Porsche enough funds to funnel it to the 911 range and expand the line-up with newer variants, including the high-performance GT versions.
