In 2024, the number of adults aged 60 and older in South Africa was estimated to be 6.6 million, according to Stats SA. The World Health Organization (WHO) forecasts indicate that the number of individuals in this age group will reach 20% of the global population by 2050 - that’s one in five people. There are vast global disparities in life expectancy, especially in this country, where, Stats SA reveals, the average life expectancy is 69.6 years for women and 64 years for men, as the arc of inequality has a profoundly negative impact on lives.
