A Highland break with relaxing swim spa experience

- by JACKI JOYCE

Dornoch Station & Aspen Spa

As we drove past Dornoch Station hotel, faithfully trusting the satnav to guide us to the car park, I was impressed. It's a grand, beautiful building with its own putting green, and even the wet weather and a two-hour detour on the drive here couldn't dampen our enthusiasm for our break.

My husband Dom and I were here for two nights for the Highland Spa Retreat, which included a three-course meal on the first evening, plus daily breakfast, along with a complimentary room upgrade. The next day I'd be enjoying relaxation and indulgence at nearby Aspen Spa in Tain, and I was especially looking forward to the swim spa.

Entering the reception of the hotel, we were met with old-world charm. Only an hour's drive from Inverness, the hotel is inspired by the Scottish Highlands and hunting cabins around Loch Ness, and the lobby features original wood panelling.

Our spacious room was tastefully furnished, in keeping with the Highland theme, and had an old-style rotary phone to add to the charm.

The elegant bathroom was a delight: spotlessly clean with stunning fittings and Floris products for our personal use.

On the bed were branded products from the hotel, plus parkin biscuits from Orkney's Westray Bakehouse and a small bottle of Rock Rose gin by Dunnet Bay Distillers - a lovely touch.

Once unpacked, we headed to The Golden Gorse for our evening meal and were warmly greeted by our host.
