Tatler visi s a clifftop sanctuary in China's emerging resort destination where thoughtfully crafted suites capture the essence of sustainable luxury

When you're planning your next beach resort getaway, pause for a moment before you book a flight—the ideal destination might be closer than you think. A ferry ride of less than two hours from Zhuhai or Shekou in Shenzhen lies Dong'ao Island, a hidden gem where dramatic cliffs plunge into ultramarine waters. The island's striking topography sets the stage for luxury hotel brand Alila's latest venture: Alila Dong'ao Island, a secluded sanctuary that opened quietly in April.

The architecture by Boston-based firm ZNA is designed to flow into the natural landscape, a quiet presence among the verdant mountains. "Alila Dong'ao Island Zhuhai appeals to eco-conscious travellers seeking serenity, immersion in nature and cultural authenticity," says Chua Thin Thin, the resort's general manager.

The resort serves as an introduction to Dong'ao Island's natural landscape, telling its story through 103 meticulously appointed rooms, with most featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the South China Sea, and tearooms that honour the region's tea heritage. Among them, two suites feature infinity pools and nine open onto their own tropical garden sanctuary.
