From wirework to shimmering foils, here is a primer to four enamelling techniques that will elevate any timepiece into a work of art.

The Finest Coat

Take A SEAT at any gathering of watch connoisseurs and the conversation inevitably turns to tourbillons, perpetual calendars, and minute repeaters. While intricate complications often steal the limelight, the art of enamelling—though not mechanically complex—demands decades of mastery to perfect its many techniques and is equally deserving of horological admiration.

Once the preserve of royalty and the elite, the fine art of enamelling has remained one of watchmaking’s most prized and rarest crafts, owing to its unforgiving nature. Among the most demanding techniques is Grand Feu (Great Fire) enamelling, a process that requires both precision and intuition honed over years of experience. The master enameller meticulously prepares a coloured paste made from powdered enamel glass, carefully applies it to the dial in multiple layers, and fires it repeatedly in a kiln at blistering temperatures exceeding 800 degrees C.

The process is arduous. At any stage, the enamel can discolour or crack, forcing the artisan to repeat the entire process. Yet, the result is nothing short of extraordinary, transforming timepieces into miniature works of art. From the intricate wirework of cloisonne to the sculptural allure of champleve, here’s a guide to four enamelling decorative techniques—and how you can recognise their unmistakable beauty.
