THE $19 BILLION PROJECT to bring John F. Kennedy International Airport “from the back of the pack to the front,” as the Port Authority chief Rick Cotton puts it, seems to have snuck up on people. The first gates of the 2.6 million-square-foot Terminal One, by Gensler and AECOM Tishman, are slated to begin receiving flights next year. It'll be the country's largest standalone terminal when it's done, and, at $9.5 billion, it's the biggest chunk of the overhaul of JFK.
