A Tale of Two Worlds

One of the most significant challenges at the intersection of geopolitics and ESG concerns is the growing divide between the Global North and the Global South. This divide is not merely geographical but rooted in deep economic inequalities, historical advantages, and disproportionate environmental burdens.

The Global North, consisting of nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, has benefited from decades of industrialization, driven by unfettered access to resources and fossil fuels. These nations have experienced significant economic growth, but the cost has been high in terms of environmental damage, with their industries being among the largest contributors to global carbon emissions.

In contrast, the Global South—countries like India, China, and many African nations—have contributed only a small fraction of global emissions. Yet, they bear the brunt of climate change’s most devastating impacts, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather patterns, and dwindling resources. Despite their minimal contribution to global emissions, these regions are disproportionately affected, highlighting the inequities in the current global climate framework.
